Beautiful Waste

"The Irresistible Revolution"

So, I'm reading a new book (well, 4 books right now) titled "The Irresistible Revolution: living life as an ordinary radical" by Shane Claiborne. It's a book I both want to continue reading, and I want to put it down and walk away from it. Thankfully, I don't think I'll walk away from it, and I hope when I finally do put it down, it stays with me. The book is a collection of stories (from what I can tell) from Shane's life that stand to challenge the church to be followers and not merely believers. There is a great quote in there by Soren Kierkegaard that is challenging me right now:

"The matter is quite simple. The Bible is very easy to understand. But we Christians are a bunch of scheming swindlers. We prentend to be unable to understand it because we know very well that the minute we understand, we are obligated to act accordingly. Take any words in the New Testament and forget everything except pledging yourself to act accordingly. My God, you will say, if I do that my whole life will be ruined. How would I ever get on in the world? Herein lies the real place of Christian Scholarship. Christian Scholarship is the Church's prodigious invention to defend itself against the Bible, to ensure that we can continue to be good Christians without the Bible coming too close. Oh, priceless scholarship, what would we do without you? Dreadful it is to fall into the hands of the living God. Yes, it is even dreadful to be alone with the New Testament."
(Soren Kierkegaard, Provocations: Spiritual Writings of Kierkegaard)

So, I don't know, think about it, tell me what you think, go to the new link I set up to "The Simple Way" - it's an intentional community which Shane and his friends started in Philly.

So I was thinking about why I like photography, other than the fact that I like to look at pictures. I think that it's an art form that resonates with me because I've never thought of myself as artistically gifted, and yet I can take some pretty neat pictures. Photography allows me to capture the beauty in God's creation and frame it from my perspective, my point of veiw. It allows me to express myself creatively through God's creation, as kind of an echo of His artistry in the world. I could say alot more on this subject, but I've been at work all day and my brain hurts.

A Beautiful Waste

Why title my Blog "Beautiful Waste"? Because this is what I hope my life will be, something which in the end is a beautiful offering poured out for the sake of Jesus, even if it is seen as a waste by the world, my family, or my friends. It's a cool concept, at least to me, and it comes from the Gospel of Mark 14:1-9. So that's what I'm about, or at least what I desire to be about, lest I mislead anyone, right now I must confess that my life is much more waste than beauty, but there are some beautiful things in it, like my wife and our marriage. Anyway, that's my title, I hope you life it.

So basically this will be a place where I drop my thoughts about whatever piques my interest (as are most blogs) and maybe post some photos (as I fancy myself a budding photographer). I hope you like it, and if you don't, well, you can always comment and let me know.
